selfishness and sacrifice
"nobody has to know
the pleasure that you take
in every step you make"
- from 'we give in sometimes' by Up dharma Down
there's a certain satisfaction and pleasure that comes in every step that you make towards the thing that you want. it may be weird to some people or illogical, but you don't need to explain that to them. as the song says, no one really needs to know. unless they think like you, in which case, they'll understand completely.
someone commented in anton's blog that we should learn to sacrifice the things what we want because it will help us to discipline ourselves and and it teaches us to be unselfish in the long run.
if we are to talk about sacrifice - going for what you want entails a lot of sacrifice. there are some things you need to give yourself, no matter how hard, by going for what you want. by doing that, you'll also be giving up something - whether it be as simple as cutting back on your monthly spending or has hard and complicated as packing up, saying bye and leaving.
if we are to talk about selfishness - yes, going for what you want is generally selfish, especially if it looks like you're affecting other people when you do it. but when the thing that you want is connected to what you want to happen for other people in the long run - i don't think that's selfish. it means making other people's wants into your wants. there's nothing selfish in that, i think.
there are times when you just need to put your foot down and say that no, this time it's going to be about me. and what better time to do that than now, when you're still being given a chance to find things out for yourself? and when the time comes that you have to do this with another person, you just hope like hell that you both want a lot of the same things - so then you can both go for what you both want. double the effort, double the power.
there is a certain satisfaction in seeing what you wanted finally in your hands. or seeing it happen. or see it make other people happy. in giving yourself that sense of accomplishment because you did it.
lately, it's been all about thinking about exactly what you want, where you want to be and who you want to be. i used to get berated for being so gung ho about going for things that i want and for trying out things, for going with my gut instinct - especially when it doesn't seem to make sense.
but that's my sacrifice. my selfishness at work. and i'm not even going to apologize. in the end, all this work on myself is not just for me, but eventually also for someone else. someone is bound to appreciate all this effort in making things better for myself, for trying things out, for seeing and for choosing things that are best fit for me.
as i see it, i'm laying down foundation where the rest of my life will probably rest on.
i only just have to hope that the decisions are make are the best ones. for me.
:)
