"saying goodbye is the hardest thing to do... when it's to someone like you"

i was texting my mom the other day (tuesday, actually) to ask her about something. in her reply, she mentioned that my sister wasn't doing so well because her best friend had left the night before. she asked me to call my sister just to talk to her.

as usual, i didn't know what to say. the sad fact of living as an expat and going to an I.S. is that you never really know who will stay or leave. and sometimes, people just leave with no warning, just when you've gotten complacent and taken for granted that you're all going to be in one place for a long time. it's sadder still, when you've practically grown up with that person, only to be hit with the reality that yes - even tho it seemed impossible - they are leaving town.

poor kid.

that's a lot to take. nothing shakes up your life more than to find a normally permanent fixture in your life gone. scarier still to realize that you may never see them again - unless of course, fate is kind to you and brings you back together.

there are some friendships that are one-of-a-kind. those that pick up right where they left off even if they haven't spoken or seen each other in ages. i hope theirs is that kind. see, my sister and mike... they were like brother and sister. so to have mike leave is definitely a life-changing event. nothing will ever be the same. they used to be attached to the hip - now they're gonna have to find someone else.

like i said, poor kid.

friendships built in childhood last, especially those that were taken cared of and fostered as well as theirs. i have hope for this friendship. i know that when they next see or talk to each other - it'll still be the same. aneka, lecturing mike for being an idiot. mike pissing the crap out of aneka just for the hell of it. the distance and time will fade as soon as they talk. a month or so from now, their lives will soon go back to normal, everything will fall into a routine. new people will come in and take the role of "best friend", but they'll never forget each other.

this i know well... it is possible. i know it well, because it's happened to me.

for now, i'm just gonna let my sister cry. she can handle it. she's tough.

this is the sad reality of goodbye... but i know she can take it.

the title above is a line from a song from a long time ago. i had to say goodbye too, but i was the one who left. and that was one of the hardest things we had to do.

don't worry little sis, things will be ok...
